During a campaign event in Detroit, President Joe Biden launched a pointed critique of Donald Trump’s record on race, suggesting Trump would have responded differently to the January 6 insurrection had it involved Black Americans. Speaking at an NAACP dinner, Biden’s comments underscored the intensifying competition for African American votes ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
Biden questioned the audience about Trump’s potential actions during the Capitol riot, highlighting the racial dynamics of the event. He noted the majority of the rioters were white, with some displaying symbols of the Confederacy. Biden contrasted this with Trump’s inaction during the insurrection and his later characterization of the rioters as “patriots.”
The president emphasized his own efforts to combat racism, including appointing the first Black female Supreme Court justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson. He accused Republicans of attempting to erase African American history and undermine diversity and inclusion.
Biden’s remarks came during a campaign swing through Georgia and Michigan, where the Black vote is seen as pivotal. He credited Black voters with his previous victory and warned of the heightened threat posed by a potential second Trump term, describing Trump as “unhinged” following his 2020 defeat.
