President Biden’s campaign aides and top surrogates moved swiftly on Friday to quash speculation that he might withdraw from the 2024 race following a poor debate performance against former President Trump. Despite the negative reviews, Biden’s campaign and supportive Democrats are emphasizing unity and urging against panic.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, considered a potential future candidate, stressed the importance of collective effort over worry. “Democrats, stop worrying and start working,” Shapiro said on MSNBC, urging focus on supporting Biden.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, also viewed as a potential White House contender, echoed this sentiment. “We’ve got to have the back of this president,” he stated, dismissing dropout talks as “unhelpful and unnecessary.”
Biden’s debate performance, marked by a hoarse voice and occasional lapses in clarity, prompted immediate concern among Democrats about his ability to effectively campaign against Trump. However, Biden’s team attributed his performance issues to a cold and insisted he remains committed to his reelection bid.
Despite the negative reactions, Biden’s campaign announced its best fundraising day of the 2024 cycle, indicating strong voter support. White House officials also pointed out Trump’s numerous falsehoods during the debate as evidence of his continued unpopularity among general election voters.
Prominent Democrats like former South Carolina state Rep. Bakari Sellers dismissed the idea of replacing Biden, urging the party to focus on unity and preparation for the election.
While discussions about Biden’s future may persist among some Democratic operatives, there is no indication that Biden plans to step down. The president himself dismissed concerns about his debate performance, emphasizing the difficulty of debating a candidate who frequently lies, and reiterating his commitment to defeating Trump in 2024.
“Of course he’s not dropping out,” Biden campaign spokesperson Seth Schuster affirmed, signaling the campaign’s continued confidence in the president’s candidacy.
