President Biden announced a $1.25 billion military aid package and a $1.22 billion Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative to support Ukraine before President-elect Trump assumes office. The military package includes air defense munitions, artillery ammunition, Javelin anti-armor systems, and other critical equipment. The initiative funds weapons contracts, with delivery expected in a year or more.
Biden emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine’s resistance to Russia, highlighting the U.S. commitment to delivering “immediate and long-term” capabilities. “We will continue surging assistance as quickly as possible,” he stated, noting efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defense heading into winter.
Additionally, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced the disbursement of $3.4 billion in direct budgetary support for Ukraine, the final tranche from the 2024 Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act. This funding is tied to reforms in governance, anti-corruption, and transparency measures.
