The Biden administration announced a significant decrease in border encounters with migrants, citing a 40% decline in the seven-day average to fewer than 2,400 encounters per day. This marks the lowest level since January 2021, attributed to President Biden’s order halting asylum processing on June 4. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) highlighted this decline as a political win for Biden amid ongoing criticism from the GOP over border management. The announcement comes just ahead of the first presidential debate with former President Trump.
In response, the White House criticized Republicans for stalling on immigration reform, contrasting it with Biden’s border security efforts. Senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates accused Republicans of obstructing bipartisan solutions supported by various stakeholders, including the Border Patrol Union and border mayors. DHS also reported significant efforts in repatriating over 24,000 individuals and enhancing removal procedures.
