Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and 11 Democratic lawmakers are urging President Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Attorney General Merrick Garland to launch a formal investigation into an Israeli airstrike that injured American journalist Dylan Collins over a year ago. The group, in a letter sent Tuesday, claims that evidence points to an “unlawful direct attack on civilians” during the incident, which also severely injured other journalists and killed one.

Collins, working for Agence France-Presse (AFP), was wounded by Israeli tank fire while reporting near the Lebanon-Israel border, despite wearing a press vest. The letter alleges a broader pattern of Israeli military disregard for civilian safety, citing reports from the Committee to Protect Journalists and the United Nations.

Earlier, Sanders sought an inquiry from the State Department, which said the Israeli government would investigate. However, findings indicated the use of Israeli-made M339 or M329 tank rounds, not U.S.-origin weapons. Now, the lawmakers, including Sen. Peter Welch (Vt.), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), and others, are pushing for further accountability and clarity regarding the chain of command responsible for the attack.
