Vice President Kamala Harris has sparked enthusiasm among Democrats, especially those previously tepid about President Joe Biden, a new AP-NORC poll shows. Approximately 80% of Democrats express satisfaction with Harris as the Democratic nominee, compared to just 40% for Biden before his withdrawal.
Democratic support for Harris has rapidly increased, with notable gains among Black and Hispanic adults and younger voters. Harris’s favorability rose from 39% to 46%, with 80% of Democrats viewing her positively.
Gary Hines, a Democrat from Philadelphia, highlighted Harris’s strong campaign and potential to defeat Trump. “She’s shown she’s up to the task,” he said.
Despite the enthusiasm, 56% of Americans still believe Trump is more likely to win. However, Democrats like Lauren Schulman from Florida feel reassured by Harris’s candidacy, citing her youth and energy as contrasts to Trump.
The poll also reveals broad support for Biden’s decision to step aside, with 75% approval across political lines. While Biden’s overall approval remains steady, his decision to endorse Harris has received mixed reactions, though it is largely supported by Democrats.
The poll was conducted with 1,143 adults from July 25-29, 2024, with a margin of error of ±4.1 percentage points.
