BERKELEY, California — A Turning Point USA event at the University of California, Berkeley descended into chaos Monday night as violent protests erupted outside the venue, leading to multiple arrests and heightened police presence. The event, featuring comedian Rob Schneider and Christian author Frank Turek, was part of the group’s American Comeback Tour — its first since the September killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
Witnesses reported clashes between protesters and attendees, with footage showing officers separating two men in a heated confrontation. Demonstrators chanted “fascists out of Berkeley” and carried signs denouncing the event, according to The Guardian. Some protesters wore keffiyehs and shouted “No Trump, No KKK, no fascist USA,” while police helicopters circled above the crowd.
Four students were arrested earlier in the day for vandalism, and two others were detained during altercations near the venue, The Daily Californian reported. A false alarm briefly caused panic when a passing car played gunfire sounds. Mikey McCoy, Kirk’s former chief of staff, accused Antifa activists of instigating the unrest.
UC Berkeley officials said the university remains committed to protecting free expression for all student groups and is reviewing its security response. The Department of Justice is reportedly investigating the incident’s broader implications for campus safety.
