Summit County, Utah — A Utah woman was convicted of aggravated murder after prosecutors said she poisoned her husband with fentanyl and later published a children’s book about grief following his death.
Kouri Richins was found guilty Monday of administering a lethal dose of fentanyl to her husband, Eric Richins, in March 2022. Prosecutors argued she was motivated by financial gain, citing debts totaling millions and life insurance policies she allegedly took out without his knowledge. They also presented evidence of an alleged affair and internet searches related to poisoning and death.
Jurors deliberated for less than three hours before returning the verdict. In addition to aggravated murder, Richins was convicted of attempted murder for a prior poisoning attempt, as well as fraud and forgery related to insurance claims.
Defense attorneys argued the prosecution failed to prove its case, but the jury sided with prosecutors. Sentencing is scheduled for May 13, and the aggravated murder conviction carries a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
