President Donald Trump has intensified his feud with Illinois leaders, saying Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson “should be in jail” for allegedly failing to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. The remark, posted Wednesday on Truth Social, comes as Texas National Guard troops arrived in Illinois under the administration’s controversial city deployment plan.
“Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect ICE officers. Governor Pritzker also,” Trump wrote.
Pritzker quickly responded on X, accusing Trump of authoritarian behavior: “Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power. What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?”
The dispute follows Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to Chicago, Portland, and other cities, which Democrats call unconstitutional federal overreach. Johnson labeled Trump “a tyrant,” while Pritzker said his administration’s actions amount to “tyranny.”
Both leaders have filed lawsuits to block the deployments as legal battles continue in multiple states.
