St. Paul, Minnesota – The Trump administration will withdraw 700 federal immigration officers from Minnesota following what officials described as increased cooperation from Democratic state and local leaders in turning over criminal illegal immigrants held in jails. The announcement was made Wednesday by White House border czar Tom Homan during a press conference.

Homan said the drawdown would take effect immediately and involve a mix of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, U.S. Border Patrol agents, and Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations personnel. After the reduction, roughly 2,000 federal immigration officers will remain stationed in Minnesota.

According to Homan, discussions with Gov. Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and other county and state officials have resulted in “significant progress,” particularly in allowing ICE to take custody of individuals already detained in local and state jails. He said that approach reduces the need for large-scale community enforcement operations, which typically require more personnel and can heighten public tension.

“We currently have an unprecedented number of counties communicating with us now and allowing ICE to take custody of illegal aliens before they hit the streets,” Homan said, describing the cooperation as unprecedented.

Homan has repeatedly pressed Minnesota officials to avoid releasing individuals wanted by federal immigration authorities. He argued that jail transfers allow ICE to operate with fewer officers while improving public safety outcomes. The move comes after weeks of negotiations aimed at easing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in Minneapolis and other parts of the state.

Officials said the situation remains fluid and further updates are expected.
