Minneapolis, Minnesota — The Trump administration is seeking to expedite the removal of a 5-year-old Minnesota boy and his father just days after a federal judge ordered their release from an immigration detention facility in Texas, according to court filings and statements from the family’s attorney.

The federal government filed a motion this week to terminate the family’s asylum claims, a step their lawyer says would clear the way for deportation proceedings. Attorney Paschal Nwokocha told Minnesota Public Radio that the family was granted additional time to respond in court and said his firm remains committed to fighting the case.

Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, returned to Minnesota last Sunday after spending 10 days detained at an ICE facility in Dilley, Texas. The pair had been taken into custody on Jan. 20 during Operation Metro Surge, a federal immigration enforcement initiative in Minnesota.

Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, who accompanied the family back to Minnesota, accused the administration of attempting to detain the child again, saying the move undermines legal precedent. The case drew national attention after a photo of Liam wearing a Spider-Man backpack went viral, fueling criticism of federal immigration tactics.

The Department of Homeland Security said the court action reflects standard removal proceedings and denied claims of retaliation. The case unfolds amid heightened scrutiny of ICE operations in Minnesota following recent protests and a partial drawdown of federal enforcement personnel in the state.
