Washington, D.C. — A key Republican senator is signaling potential resistance to President Donald Trump’s next attorney general nominee, setting a firm condition tied to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) said he will not support any nominee who attempts to justify or minimize the events of Jan. 6, emphasizing that the issue is a “threshold” requirement for his vote. His stance could prove critical given his role on the Senate Judiciary Committee, where nominees are vetted.
The comments follow Trump’s dismissal of Attorney General Pam Bondi, with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche currently serving in an interim capacity. Blanche, who previously represented Trump in legal cases related to the 2020 election, is considered a potential nominee but could face opposition in the Senate.
Tillis previously supported Bondi’s confirmation but opposed Trump’s blanket pardons of individuals involved in the Jan. 6 riot, signaling a break with the president on that issue.
Other potential candidates under consideration reportedly include Ron DeSantis, Ken Paxton, and former officials within the Justice Department.
With a closely divided Senate, Tillis’s position may significantly influence whether any nominee can secure confirmation, setting up a potential intra-party conflict over the administration’s next attorney general pick.
