SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Police arrested a 20-year-old suspect Friday after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the home of Sam Altman, prompting a broader investigation into threats tied to the tech executive and his company.
According to authorities, officers responded shortly after 4 a.m. to reports of an incendiary device thrown at a residence in the North Beach area. The device ignited an exterior gate before the suspect fled on foot. No injuries were reported.
About an hour later, police responded to a second incident involving a man allegedly threatening to burn down a building on the 1400 block of 3rd Street, where OpenAI maintains offices. Officers identified the individual as the same suspect connected to the earlier attack and detained him at the scene.
San Francisco police said charges are pending as the investigation continues into both incidents.
In a statement, OpenAI said it appreciated the swift response from law enforcement and is cooperating fully to ensure the safety of employees.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s name, and officials said the motive remains under investigation.
