SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Hundreds of protesters gathered outside a Salt Lake City warehouse set to become an ICE detention facility, voicing opposition to the project and calling for its cancellation. Demonstrators chanted “ICE out” and urged local and federal officials to block the conversion of the site, which was recently purchased by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for $145.4 million.

The protest remained mostly peaceful but included moments of tension, with some demonstrators clashing with individuals believed to be federal agents. Property damage was reported, including vandalism and rocks thrown at the building. Law enforcement detained at least one person as the crowd dispersed.

Local leaders from both parties have raised concerns about the project, citing lack of transparency and suitability of the industrial site for housing detainees. ICE has defended the plan, stating the facility will meet detention standards and improve community safety following internal review processes.

Opponents argue the center is inhumane and reflects broader concerns about immigration enforcement policies, while supporters say it will strengthen public safety and enforcement operations.
