Chicago, Illinois — National progressive groups are backing activist Kat Abughazaleh in Illinois’s 9th Congressional District as pro-Israel organizations increase spending in competitive Democratic primaries around Chicago.

Justice Democrats and the newly launched Peace, Accountability, and Leadership PAC endorsed Abughazaleh, a Palestinian American activist running to replace retiring Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.). The district is one of several in Illinois drawing outside attention from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its affiliated political groups.

AIPAC donors have contributed heavily to state Sen. Laura Fine’s campaign, and affiliated super PACs are funding advertisements in the race. Fine has said she is not seeking AIPAC’s support. Other candidates include Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, Bushra Amiwala, Phil Andrew and state Rep. Hoan Huynh.

Abughazaleh has centered her campaign on criticism of U.S. military aid to Israel, support for Palestinian rights, Medicare for All and immigration reform. She is also facing a federal indictment related to protest actions against Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The 9th District primary reflects broader national tensions within the Democratic Party over Israel policy, campaign spending and outside influence heading into the midterm elections.
