PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — Private messages obtained by the Washington Examiner show a group of Philadelphia public school teachers collaborating with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), an activist organization currently facing multiple congressional investigations over alleged ties to Hamas. Philadelphia Educators for Palestine (PEFP), led in part by teacher Hannah Gann, discussed joint “teach-ins” with local SJP chapters and campaigns targeting corporate partnerships, according to the report.
SJP has drawn national controversy for statements praising Hamas’ October 7 attacks in 2023 and promoting “national days of resistance.” Federal lawmakers have launched investigations into Americans Muslims for Palestine — the group behind SJP — citing past leadership roles held by individuals linked to Hamas-associated entities.
The report also highlights concerns about political activism inside Philadelphia classrooms. Screenshots obtained by the North American Values Institute show students included in PEFP’s group chat, which would violate district policy. Another teacher, previously disciplined, filmed her classroom displaying a “from the river to the sea” poster with a QR code linking to materials from organizations connected to U.S.-designated terrorist groups.
NAVI researchers said teachers were “abusing their position,” while Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office condemned antisemitic rhetoric and urged the district to take the matter seriously. The GOP-led House Committee on Education and Workforce is now investigating whether the district has failed its obligations under Title VI by allowing harassment to occur.
