ATLANTA, Georgia — Sen. Jon Ossoff escalated his criticism of President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran war Sunday, accusing the administration of repeatedly misleading Americans about the conflict’s justification, progress and expected duration.
“There’s something uniquely despicable about lying a nation into war, treating citizens as fools and those who serve as pawns,” the Georgia Democrat told supporters at an Atlanta rally.
Ossoff pointed to a series of administration declarations that he argued have not matched events on the ground. He noted that Trump previously said Iran’s nuclear program had been “obliterated,” then later portrayed it as an imminent threat requiring renewed military action. Ossoff also contrasted early claims of rapid victory with a conflict now approaching six months.
His criticism comes as public support for the war remains weak. A June Marquette Law School Poll found just 33% of Americans approved of Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict, below his overall job approval at the time.
The war has also become an economic issue ahead of the midterms. Fighting and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz have pushed gasoline prices sharply higher. The national average was about $4.07 per gallon Sunday, compared with roughly $3.14 a year earlier, according to AAA figures cited by The Hill.
Ossoff is seeking reelection in battleground Georgia, making his attack on Trump’s foreign policy part of a broader Democratic argument that the administration promised lower prices and peace but has instead delivered higher household costs and a prolonged Middle East conflict.
