FRANKFORT, Kentucky — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Sunday that Sen. Mitch McConnell has still not responded to requests for a direct public update on his health, arguing that the longtime Republican senator owes constituents evidence that he remains capable of serving.
“I’ve heard absolutely nothing back from Mitch McConnell,” Beshear said on CBS’s Face the Nation. He said McConnell could resolve much of the uncertainty by making a brief television appearance or posting a two-minute video. “All he needs to do is call into this show for two minutes, or Fox News for two minutes,” Beshear said.
McConnell, 84, has been out of public view since a mid-June fall that left him briefly unconscious. He later developed pneumonia and spent weeks in rehabilitation. His office announced Aug. 6 that he had returned home and would continue intensive physical therapy while remaining engaged with staff and Senate colleagues.
Beshear said he wishes McConnell well but argued that Senate leaders also have a responsibility to ensure members can perform their duties. McConnell has not announced a specific date for returning to the Capitol.
The senator has previously released written health updates and a photograph with his wife, Elaine Chao, but he has not made a live public appearance since the hospitalization.
McConnell is serving his final term and plans to leave the Senate when it expires in January 2027.
