COLUMBUS, Ohio — Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is distancing himself from comments he made about extending the school year and lengthening the school day, after a campaign video he posted online drew scrutiny from Democrats and was later edited to remove the proposal. The original video, shared on social media, featured Ramaswamy suggesting that students attend school year-round and stay in class until 4 p.m. as part of a broader effort to reduce child-care costs for families.

Democratic candidate Amy Acton highlighted the remarks by posting a clip of the initial video, prompting Republicans to briefly accuse Acton’s campaign of using AI to fabricate the footage. Ramaswamy’s team later acknowledged to the Columbus Dispatch that the video was authentic and said it had been replaced because it was part of an informal TikTok exchange, not a formal policy rollout.

A campaign spokesperson told The Center Square that Democrats were “trying to manufacture an issue,” adding that Ramaswamy remains focused on improving education by listening to parents across Ohio. The edited version of the video no longer includes the statements about year-round schooling.

In the original clip, Ramaswamy said making schools operate all year and extending dismissal to 4 p.m. could help parents avoid child-care expenses. The proposal did not address the considerable taxpayer costs required to expand school operations. Ramaswamy also used the video to outline ideas on lowering housing, energy, health-care, and property-tax costs.
