Trenton, New Jersey — New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Monday called for the immediate impeachment of U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis man by a Border Patrol agent, saying federal officials are misleading the public about the incident.
Sherrill, who took office last week, made the remarks during an interview with WNYC, one day after Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) also called for Noem’s impeachment. Sherrill said federal immigration agents are “acting completely outside the scope of their duties” and warned that their actions pose a danger to the public.
The shooting involved Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old Minneapolis nurse, who was killed Saturday during an encounter with federal immigration agents. It marked the second fatal shooting by immigration agents in Minneapolis this month, as the city has seen a surge of federal enforcement tied to President Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts.
Noem has claimed Pretti approached agents with a firearm intending to harm law enforcement, prompting an act of self-defense. However, video footage appears to show agents disarming Pretti before he was shot multiple times. Local officials have said Pretti was legally permitted to carry a firearm.
Sherrill accused the administration of “wholesale lying” and said the video evidence raises serious questions about accountability. Her comments come as immigrant advocates in New Jersey push lawmakers to limit cooperation between local authorities and federal immigration agents, reviving debates over state and federal authority.
