Lincoln, Nebraska — Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen announced a partnership with Turning Point USA (TPUSA) to expand its “Club America” chapters into public high schools statewide, framing the effort as a push for civic engagement and student free speech.

Speaking at the Governor’s Mansion, Pillen described the initiative as a way to help students learn about the Constitution, develop leadership skills and engage in debate. He took no questions and provided few operational details. TPUSA representatives also declined to outline how the partnership would be implemented across Nebraska’s more than 250 public high schools.

Turning Point USA, founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk, has traditionally organized on college campuses but has increasingly expanded into secondary schools. The group says its high school chapters help students register to vote and promote discussion about “the foundations of a free society.” Nebraska joins several Republican-led states, including Texas and Florida, that have announced similar collaborations.

Critics raised concerns about political neutrality. Tim Royers, president of the Nebraska State Education Association, said public schools must remain nonpartisan environments and that student activities should be governed locally. Supporters, including Attorney General Mike Hilgers, called the partnership a positive step toward constructive civic dialogue.

Details about the governor’s formal role in facilitating the expansion remain unclear.
