New Jersey — A former congressional staffer for Rep. Jeff Van Drew is facing federal charges after investigators say she staged a violent political attack that included self-inflicted injuries and messages written across her body. Natalie Greene, 26, made her first court appearance Wednesday on charges of conspiracy to convey false statements and making false statements to federal agents — offenses that each carry a potential five-year prison sentence.

According to a federal complaint, Greene and a female co-conspirator called 911 on July 23, claiming three men assaulted them on a nature trail while referencing politics and Greene’s work for Van Drew. Police arrived to find Greene bound with zip ties, her shirt pulled over her head, and the phrases “TRUMP WHORE” and “VAN DREW IS RACIST” marked across her torso. She alleged her attackers threatened to shoot her and carved the messages into her skin.

Investigators say the injuries were not caused by attackers but by a scarification artist Greene had hired days earlier to create lacerations in a design she requested. Zip ties matching those used in the alleged attack were found in Greene’s vehicle, and her co-conspirator’s phone had recent searches for “zip ties near me.”

Rep. Van Drew’s office said Greene no longer works for him and expressed hope she receives needed care. Greene was released on a $200,000 unsecured bond.
