A Missouri woman is on trial for allegedly stealing millions in federal funds meant to feed low-income children and using the money to finance a lavish lifestyle. Prosecutors say Connie Bobo, founder of the New Heights Community Resource Center, diverted roughly $11 million from U.S. Department of Agriculture programs that reimburse organizations providing after-school and summer meals to children.
Bobo allegedly requested $20 million for six million meals but bought food for fewer than three million, according to Missouri health regulators who uncovered major reporting discrepancies. Investigators say she used the funds to buy a $1 million home in St. Charles County and gave her boyfriend $1.4 million, part of which was spent on a luxury Mercedes-Benz SUV.
Bobo faces three counts of wire fraud, one count of aggravated identity theft, and one count of obstruction. Prosecutors say she falsified invoices and forged documents, including listing a former friend as vice president without consent. Her attorney, Katryna Spearman, argued that Bobo never intended to defraud and acted in the community’s interest.
If convicted, Bobo faces more than 20 years in prison and may forfeit homes and vehicles to repay the federal government.
