Madison, Wisconsin — A Wisconsin man was sentenced Friday to 16½ years in prison for forging threats against President Donald Trump in an attempt to have a robbery victim deported.
A Milwaukee County jury in January convicted 52-year-old Demetric DeShawn Scott of felony identity theft, witness intimidation, bail jumping and reckless endangerment. Judge Kristy Yang imposed a combined sentence totaling 16½ years, including time already served on the bail jumping charge.
Prosecutors said Scott stabbed Mexican immigrant Ramon Morales Reyes during a 2023 robbery in Milwaukee, then later wrote letters from jail posing as Morales Reyes. The letters, sent to state and federal officials, threatened to kill Trump at a rally in an effort to trigger immigration enforcement and derail the robbery case.
Federal authorities briefly detained Morales Reyes after the letters surfaced. Investigators later concluded he could not have written them, citing language barriers and handwriting discrepancies. Scott admitted to writing the letters, according to court records.
Morales Reyes has since been released on bond and is pursuing legal relief to remain in the U.S.
