A Honduran family, including a 6-year-old boy with leukemia, is being held at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, prompting a federal lawsuit against ICE and DHS alleging constitutional rights violations. The family was arrested outside an immigration court in California despite having an active asylum case, attorneys from RAICES, the Texas Civil Rights Project, and Columbia Law School’s Immigrants Rights Clinic say.

“This is a family who did everything right,” said TCRP attorney Kate Gibson Kumar. “They’re struggling. The children cry daily. The youngest is missing leukemia treatments.”

The Dilley facility, operated by CoreCivic, has faced scrutiny over medical conditions. Advocacy groups allege substandard pediatric care, citing past incidents, including a 2018 child death.

A federal judge has ordered ICE and DHS to respond to the lawsuit by July 1. President Trump’s renewed family detention policies have fueled criticism from immigrant advocates who call the situation a “humanitarian crisis.”

ICE acknowledged receiving media requests but did not provide comment by deadline.
