San Antonio, Texas — Latino voter turnout increased significantly in the 2026 Texas Democratic primary, while Republican participation declined in many Latino-majority areas, according to newly reported election data.

Statewide Democratic primary turnout rose from 6.3% in 2022 to about 11.9% in 2026. Participation in the state’s 64 Latino-majority counties climbed even higher, increasing from roughly 9% in 2022 to 13.1% this year.

By comparison, Republican turnout in those counties remained relatively flat, rising only slightly from 7.2% in 2022 to about 7.3% in 2026. Overall Republican turnout statewide declined compared with recent elections.

Latino-majority counties include areas such as Bexar County, home to San Antonio, and Nueces County, which includes Corpus Christi, as well as counties along the Texas–Mexico border.

Political analysts say the shift could signal renewed Democratic engagement in communities that had shown signs of moving toward Republicans in recent election cycles.

Rafael Collazo of UnidosUS described the turnout surge as potentially significant for the general election. Meanwhile, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley political scientist Álvaro Corral suggested some voters may be reacting to economic concerns, immigration enforcement policies, and foreign policy debates.

Latinos account for more than one-quarter of registered voters in Texas.
