WASHINGTON, D.C. — Immigration remains President Donald Trump’s strongest issue among Republican voters, even as most Americans express concern about the administration’s increasingly aggressive enforcement tactics.
A new Associated Press-NORC poll found that approximately 8 in 10 Republicans approve of Trump’s handling of immigration. About 6 in 10 also support the approach taken by federal immigration agencies, compared with only 4% of Democrats.
Nationally, however, just 39% of adults approve of Trump’s immigration performance. Nearly half said he has exceeded his authority, while majorities opposed tactics such as using routine traffic stops to locate undocumented immigrants and deploying heavily armed federal agents into American cities.
The poll followed a turbulent year of enforcement operations that included deadly encounters involving federal immigration officers. Those incidents appear to have widened the divide between Trump’s loyal Republican base and the broader public.
Immigration still rates better for Trump than other major issues. Only 32% of adults approve of his handling of the economy, while Republican confidence in his management of the war with Iran has also weakened.
The results suggest Republicans remain supportive of Trump’s overall immigration goals, but many Americans believe his administration has crossed acceptable legal and humanitarian boundaries while pursuing them.
