MIAMI, Florida — Capital One says it closed more than 300 Trump-affiliated bank accounts after a months-long anti-money-laundering review, challenging the Trump Organization’s claim that the decision was driven by political hostility.

The bank made the disclosure Friday while asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the Trump Organization and Eric Trump. The plaintiffs allege Capital One embraced “woke” politics and targeted the family business following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

Capital One said its compliance specialists examined account activity under internal policies and federal regulatory guidance before notifying Trump-affiliated entities in March 2021 that their accounts would close. The bank argued that transaction patterns matched types of activity flagged by federal banking guidance.

The filing does not accuse Donald Trump, his family or the Trump Organization of laundering money. Instead, it says anti-money-laundering concerns, not religious or political discrimination, prompted the account closures.

Capital One called the political allegations “misguided” and based on selective quotations stripped of their full context. The Trump Organization has maintained that the closures caused financial and reputational harm.

The dispute comes as Trump pressures banks over alleged discrimination against conservatives. He issued an executive order against politically motivated debanking in 2025 and later filed a similar lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase.
