WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump publicly attacked U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro on Saturday after her office moved to dismiss felony charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn over alleged damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
“I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, insisting the damage was caused by vandals despite his own Justice Department’s conclusion that the pool’s lining failed because of defective contractor work. Trump also posted videos that he claimed showed people cutting the material.
Pirro’s office said newly provided Interior Department records showed contractor Atlantic Industrial Coatings improperly installed the lining while rushing to finish the $14 million renovation before America 250 events. Prosecutors acknowledged they would not have sought Hearn’s indictment had officials provided complete information earlier.
Hearn faced up to 10 years in prison after being accused of pulling at the lining during a June visit. Later inspections found widespread peeling, including in areas that would have been difficult for a vandal to reach.
Trump’s pressure on Pirro is extraordinary because prosecutors are obligated to dismiss cases when evidence no longer supports the charge, regardless of the president’s personal belief. Hearn’s attorneys said the reckless “charge first, investigate later” prosecution damaged an innocent man and renewed their demand for an apology.
