A Tarrant County judge has barred former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke and his political group, Powered by People, from financially supporting Texas Democrats who left the state to block a Republican redistricting plan.

The temporary injunction, issued by Judge Megan Fahey just hours after Attorney General Ken Paxton filed suit, prohibits O’Rourke’s group from fundraising for or covering expenses of the absent lawmakers. Fahey’s ruling found the group engaged in deceptive fundraising and facilitated violations of state law by funding legislators during a special session.

O’Rourke filed a countersuit in El Paso district court, accusing Paxton of overreach and attempting to silence a major voter registration organization. In a statement, he said Paxton was targeting those who “fight for voting rights and free elections.”

Paxton celebrated the ruling, calling it the end of “Beto Bribe buyouts” and framing it as part of a broader Republican effort to compel Democrats’ return. The quorum break is aimed at preventing passage of a House map that would give the GOP five more seats ahead of the 2026 midterms.
