Dearborn, Michigan — Roughly 2,000 protesters and counterprotesters gathered Tuesday outside the Henry Ford Centennial Library as a Christian nationalist demonstration led by pardoned Jan. 6 rioter Jake Lang brought heightened tensions to the heavily Arab American community.

Lang organized what he called a “Christian Crusader March” and later addressed the Dearborn City Council, accusing Muslims of attempting to gain political and demographic control. Police in riot gear formed a line separating Lang’s supporters from counterprotesters as both sides traded chants and insults.

The council meeting was moved to the library because of safety concerns. Although several confrontations appeared close to becoming physical, much of the hostility remained verbal. Dearborn police had not immediately released information about arrests or injuries.

Lang organized the event with Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell, a Trump supporter who serves on Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers’ Faith Coalition Leadership Team. Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign called on Rogers to disavow the rally and Sewell’s participation.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Sen. Elissa Slotkin and Rep. Rashida Tlaib were among Democratic officials condemning the demonstration as anti-Muslim.

Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud said fear surrounding the rally caused some businesses to remain closed. Resident Muhammad Al-Thibabawi said many participants ultimately saw Dearborn as “just a normal city” whose residents value their constitutional rights and America.
