Tallahassee, Florida — State Rep. Angie Nixon scored one of Tuesday night’s biggest primary upsets, defeating former National Security Council official Alex Vindman for Florida’s Democratic U.S. Senate nomination despite being dramatically outspent.
Nixon, a progressive lawmaker and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, won about 56% of the vote to Vindman’s 44%, according to election results. Vindman had raised roughly 16 times as much money as Nixon, making her victory particularly unexpected.
Vindman became nationally prominent after testifying during President Donald Trump’s first impeachment proceedings in 2019. Following Tuesday’s defeat, he congratulated Nixon and pledged to support her against Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November.
Nixon has emphasized her labor activism and progressive economic policies while downplaying ideological labels. Although she belongs to the DSA, the national organization did not endorse her campaign. Her victory comes amid uneven results for democratic socialists: Rep. Jared Moskowitz easily defeated DSA-backed challenger Oliver Larkin elsewhere in Florida.
Nixon now faces a difficult general-election environment. Florida has shifted substantially toward Republicans in recent election cycles, and Moody, a former state attorney general appointed to Marco Rubio’s Senate seat, enters the race as the favorite.
The November winner will serve the remaining two years of Rubio’s Senate term.
