PALM BEACH, Florida — President Donald Trump voted by mail in Florida’s Republican primary Tuesday, even as he continues pushing to sharply restrict the same voting method nationwide and repeatedly claims, without evidence, that mail ballots are inherently vulnerable to fraud.

Palm Beach County records show Trump requested a mail ballot in late July and returned it Aug. 13. The White House defended his decision by pointing out that Trump’s proposed restrictions would preserve exceptions for voters who are traveling. (thehill.com)

The irony is difficult to miss. Trump has repeatedly described mail-in voting as “crooked,” “cheating” and a source of widespread election fraud, despite no evidence of systemic fraud sufficient to alter national election outcomes. Reuters has noted that Trump has pushed those claims for years while using mail voting himself.

Trump’s administration is currently asking the Supreme Court to allow implementation of an executive order tightening mail-ballot procedures before the November midterms. Federal judges have blocked key provisions, finding that the president lacks authority to unilaterally regulate state election procedures.

The administration’s March order would require states to provide approved mail-voter lists and directs the Postal Service to restrict delivery of ballots that do not meet federal requirements. The White House says the measures are intended to improve election security.

Trump also voted by mail in a Florida special election earlier this year while publicly denouncing the practice, making Tuesday’s ballot another example of him personally using a system he portrays as fundamentally suspect.
