Federal health officials are investigating a new multistate salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers grown by Florida-based Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales. At least 26 people across 15 states have fallen ill, including nine hospitalizations, according to the FDA and CDC. No deaths have been reported.
The cucumbers were distributed to grocery stores, restaurants, and food service providers between April 29 and May 19 and may still be in circulation. Officials urge consumers to discard cucumbers if they are unsure of the source.
This is the second outbreak tied to Bedner Growers. A 2024 incident caused 551 illnesses and 155 hospitalizations in 34 states, traced to contaminated canal water. A follow-up inspection in April uncovered salmonella matching patient samples.
Organic cucumbers are not affected. Some cases have been reported from cruise ships leaving Florida.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and cramps. Vulnerable groups may face serious complications requiring hospitalization.
