Erika Kirk, widow of slain activist Charlie Kirk, has been named chief executive officer and chair of the board of Turning Point USA, the conservative advocacy group her husband founded in 2012.

The organization’s board of directors announced the decision on social media, saying Erika Kirk, 36, was unanimously elected to the leadership role. The statement added that Charlie Kirk had told several executives he wanted his wife to take over in the event of his death.

“Charlie prepared us all for a moment like this one,” the board wrote. “Turning Point USA was built to survive even the greatest tests.” The letter pledged to carry on Kirk’s vision, calling his death “an attempt to destroy Charlie’s work” that would instead strengthen the group’s mission.

Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. Erika Kirk will now oversee TPUSA’s national operations as it adjusts to the loss of its founder and public face.
