NEW YORK, New York — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Saturday that she has no regrets about publicly discussing her decision to freeze her eggs, arguing that the political scrutiny she has received reflects a broader double standard faced by women in public life.
“I was born a woman, period,” the New York Democrat said in videos posted to Instagram. “Any negativity or judgement that I would receive at any point is negativity that I would receive for being a woman, whether I shared this information or not. So I might as well help others.”
Ocasio-Cortez, 36, disclosed the procedure earlier this month, saying it gave her greater control over future decisions about having children. She has also acknowledged that discussing fertility publicly carries political risks as speculation grows about a possible 2028 presidential or Senate campaign.
She told followers that years of intense scrutiny since her first congressional primary victory at age 28 had made her more resilient to criticism, while arguing that male politicians generally are not subjected to the same level of attention over family planning.
Her announcement has prompted criticism and mockery from some conservative commentators, although it has also drawn attention to the practical and financial realities of egg freezing. Reuters reported Friday that the procedure can cost thousands of dollars upfront, plus recurring storage fees.
Ocasio-Cortez has said she wanted to normalize conversations about reproductive choices and the tradeoffs women face between careers and family planning.
