WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump spent part of Saturday posting AI-generated images of himself alongside George Washington while again teasing the idea of winning another presidential election in 2028, despite the Constitution barring him from being elected to a third term.
Trump first posted an AI image depicting himself and Washington signing documents with feather pens, followed minutes later by another showing the two presidents riding horses together. Between those posts, Trump shared a black-and-white image of himself wearing a “Trump 2028” hat with the caption, “We are going to win.”
The 2028 suggestion continues a recurring bit of political trolling from Trump, although he recently acknowledged the legal obstacle himself. Asked last week about another campaign, Trump said, “I’d love to run, but the law is very strong.”
That law is the 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four presidential victories. Its text states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” directly preventing Trump from simply seeking and winning another presidential term.
Trump has repeatedly floated third-term scenarios, sold “Trump 2028” merchandise and displayed similar hats while insisting at other times that he understands the constitutional limitation.
Saturday’s posts appear to continue that pattern rather than announce an actual campaign. Still, the president’s repeated promotion of a constitutionally prohibited third election has kept speculation alive among supporters and critics while Republicans increasingly begin looking toward potential successors for 2028.
