The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that aimed to address the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. The resolution, which was drafted by Egypt and supported by 14 other council members, called for an immediate ceasefire and the lifting of the blockade on Gaza. The U.S. was the only member to vote against the resolution.
U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stated that the resolution was “unbalanced” and did not adequately address Israel’s security concerns. She also mentioned that the U.S. is committed to a two-state solution and is working with Israel and Palestine to achieve lasting peace. The veto comes amid a renewed wave of violence in the region, with rocket attacks from Gaza and Israeli airstrikes reported in recent days.
