The U.S. Department of Justice has charged Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son, with tax evasion, alleging he failed to pay $1.4 million in taxes while indulging in a luxurious lifestyle. The indictment, filed in the Central District of California, includes three felony and six misdemeanor charges, potentially leading to a 17-year prison sentence.

The charges detail a four-year period (2016-2019) during which Biden allegedly spent extravagantly on personal indulgences while neglecting his tax obligations. His lawyer, Abbe Lowell, claims Biden has settled his tax dues and criticizes the charges as politically motivated.

The White House has not commented on the matter.

The indictment also highlights Biden’s lucrative positions on the boards of Burisma and a Chinese private equity fund, contributing to his income. In a separate Delaware case, Biden pleaded not guilty to charges related to a handgun purchase.
