Republican Representative Andy Biggs expressed strong disapproval of his party’s handling of government funding during a recent Newsmax interview. As a former chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, Biggs was critical of the GOP’s progress on the 12 individual spending bills, stating emphatically, “None. None. None have been completed.” He highlighted that seven bills passed from the House to the Senate, but the Senate hasn’t acted on any. Biggs lamented the lack of a strong campaign platform for his party, saying, “We have nothing to go out there and campaign on, Chris. It’s embarrassing.”
The interview revealed a growing frustration among House and Senate conservatives, particularly regarding the delay in supplemental funding bills due to debates over securing the southern U.S. border. This disagreement has stalled funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. House Republicans, skeptical about Ukraine funding, indicated willingness to support Ukraine’s supplemental package if their proposed border security bill, H.R. 2, passes.
Senator Rick Scott emphasized the importance of border security, stating, “There’s going to be a big effort to make sure we do nothing on funding unless we secure the border.” He described the southern border situation as a “clear and present danger” and expressed his commitment to ensuring no funding bill passes without securing the border.
The budget impasse raises the specter of a partial government shutdown if funding for military construction and several departments is not provided by January 19, with further government funding requirements due by February 2.
