Senate Republican leaders are pushing to halt a bill providing over $61 billion in aid for Ukraine, insisting on including immigration and asylum reforms. Tensions escalated during a classified briefing on Ukraine, leading to a shouting match over border security. GOP senators, led by Mitch McConnell (Ky.), reject Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) offer to combine President Biden’s request for Ukraine aid with the FEND Off Fentanyl Act and a border security amendment.

McConnell demands significant immigration policy changes, stating, “We insist on meaningful changes to the border.” Schumer’s proposal to attach funding for synagogues, mosques, and other nonprofits to the Ukraine aid bill, while allowing a Republican border security amendment, was dismissed by a GOP aide as “not a serious proposal.”

The $110.5 billion supplemental funding package, unveiled by Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Patty Murray (D-Wash.), faces opposition from key Republicans like Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) without a border security agreement.

The meeting’s tension peaked when Schumer accused McConnell of hijacking the briefing, leading to heated exchanges between senators, particularly Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), over the Southern border situation. Cramer criticized Schumer’s amendment proposal, claiming it would fail due to Democratic opposition to border security measures.
