Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, initially slated to testify in a defamation trial, has unexpectedly declined to do so. This trial involves Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, two former Georgia election workers who are suing Giuliani. They allege defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, civil conspiracy, and seek punitive damages. Giuliani had hinted he would testify but retracted, leaving the decision unclear.

Freeman and Moss claim they faced severe threats after being baselessly accused of election fraud in the 2020 presidential election. They are seeking over $43.5 million in damages for the extensive harm caused. The trial featured their testimony, detailing the violent, racist threats they received post-accusation, severely impacting their lives.

Moss shared her struggles with major depressive disorder and acute stress disorder, leading to her departure from her job at the Fulton County Registration and Elections office. She felt isolated and missed a promotion. Freeman spoke of being terrorized by hateful messages, including racial slurs and violent threats. The intensity of these threats led Freeman to fear public recognition by her name.

With Giuliani’s testimony no longer expected, the jury, comprising eight Washington, D.C., residents, will deliberate on the damages to be awarded to Freeman and Moss after closing arguments. The lawsuit demands upward of $43.5 million, as stated in court filings.
