A civil rights lawsuit on behalf of approximately 1,300 individuals who were arrested or physically harmed by police during racial injustice demonstrations in 2020 has been settled by New York City. The city has agreed to pay out more than $13 million, with each eligible individual receiving $9,950, with some exceptions for those arrested for specific crimes or seen obstructing police on video.
This settlement allows the city to avoid a costly and contentious trial and comes at a time when other US cities are also negotiating settlements with protesters who participated in Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
