President Joe Biden is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Tuesday, amidst stalled congressional negotiations on Ukraine aid. This marks Zelensky’s third Washington visit since the Ukraine war began, with his last visit in September. The meeting’s timing is crucial as Congress struggles to finalize an emergency aid package for Ukraine and Israel, linked to immigration and border policy changes. Zelensky is also scheduled to address an all-senators meeting and meet House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The White House aims to reaffirm the U.S.’s steadfast support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion. Discussions will focus on Ukraine’s immediate needs and the importance of ongoing U.S. support. The leaders will explore further defense cooperation, including joint weapon and air defense system projects. The proposed $106 billion aid package includes significant funding for Ukraine’s defense against Russia.

Biden emphasizes the urgency of Ukraine’s needs, criticizing “extreme Republicans” for jeopardizing national security over border security debates. Amidst these tensions, Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska highlights the dire need for Western military aid, stating that Ukraine’s survival depends on it.
