The Biden administration has advised Israel to postpone its planned ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, according to U.S. officials. The move aims to allow time for hostage negotiations and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza. The U.S. is not demanding a halt but suggests that Israel allow time to negotiate the release of 212 hostages.

President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have discussed the situation, agreeing to continue the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been in frequent contact with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, discussing operational matters and emphasizing the priority of recovering hostages. The advice comes amid concerns that a ground invasion would escalate tensions and make hostage releases less likely.

U.S. officials also express concerns about potential attacks on U.S. interests in the region from Iran-backed groups.
