A legal dispute regarding Louisiana’s congressional district map has been sent back to a lower court by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The plan, which Black voters challenged, was defended by a Republican state official and created by the Republican-led state legislature. However, it is likely that the map discriminated unlawfully based on race.
U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick has ordered Louisiana’s legislature to create two House districts where Black voters represent the majority of voters, instead of just one. This decision may increase the likelihood of Democrats regaining control of the House next year.
