Miami, Florida – Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said he plans to seek impeachment of a Miami-Dade judge after a woman was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the drowning death of her 15-month-old daughter.

Precious Bland, 43, was acquitted Tuesday by Judge Miguel De La O after a two-day bench trial. Bland had faced aggravated manslaughter and attempted murder charges after prosecutors said she drowned her baby and stabbed her husband and teenage daughter in 2021.

Her defense argued that she was experiencing a psychotic episode linked to COVID-19 and believed she was baptizing family members because “COVID is going to kill us all.” Prosecutors argued Bland was angry over her husband’s alleged infidelity and understood what she was doing.

“This was a bench trial. It’s time to impeach this judge,” Uthmeier wrote on X.

De La O said the prosecution’s theory did not explain Bland’s behavior and found she was legally insane at the time. A hearing was scheduled to determine the conditions of Bland’s release.
