Washington, D.C. – Sen. Bernie Sanders released internal Health and Human Services emails Thursday that he says show Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pressured the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over vaccine messaging and recommendations.

Sanders, the ranking member on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said the emails were provided by former CDC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Debra Houry. The documents appear to show HHS political officials seeking review of major CDC decisions before they went into effect.

According to The Hill, the emails also indicate Kennedy directed the cancellation of flu vaccine campaigns and changed COVID-19 vaccine recommendations without normal CDC input. Sanders said the records show Kennedy continued promoting claims about vaccines and autism that have been repeatedly rejected by major scientific and public health organizations.

Kennedy has long criticized vaccine policy and previously led an anti-vaccine organization before becoming HHS secretary. Sanders called for a bipartisan investigation into former CDC Director Susan Monarez’s firing and again urged Kennedy to resign.
