WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump blamed voters and Democrats for Thursday’s sharp stock-market sell-off, just one day after claiming personal credit for a post-election rally.

“The Stock Market crashed today because the Dumocrats had a big Tuesday,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that Americans had “only yourselves to blame.” In another post, Trump blamed Democratic election victories for falling 401(k) balances.

The comments represented a dramatic reversal from Wednesday, when Trump celebrated record market levels and told Americans their retirement accounts were “through the roof.” That rally occurred immediately after Democrats captured both chambers of Congress.

Thursday erased those gains. The Dow fell 3.4%, the S&P 500 dropped 4.4%, and the Nasdaq plunged 5.5%, its worst performance since the 2025 tariff shock.

Investors were particularly concerned about AI and semiconductor stocks. Reuters reported that fears of tougher Democratic scrutiny of massive data-center projects contributed to the sell-off, alongside concerns about high borrowing costs, debt and whether enormous AI investments will generate sufficient returns.

The contrast is striking: Trump credited himself when stocks rose following a Democratic victory, then blamed those same election results — and voters themselves — when markets fell one day later.
