WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democrats are preparing a broad wave of congressional investigations into President Donald Trump, his family’s business interests and several major administration policies after winning control of both the House and Senate.

House Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries, Robert Garcia and Jamie Raskin, say they plan to use subpoena power to examine what they describe as possible conflicts of interest, self-enrichment and abuses of government authority.

Among the potential targets are Trump family real estate and cryptocurrency ventures, federal contracts, immigration enforcement operations, the administration’s handling of files related to Jeffrey Epstein and major White House construction projects.

Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said Democrats intend to investigate what he called the “tentacles of corruption” surrounding the administration. Those claims remain allegations unless supported by evidence gathered through congressional inquiries or other investigations.

The expanded oversight agenda reflects a major shift in Washington. Republican control of Congress had largely insulated the administration from Democratic subpoenas and committee investigations. That changes in January, when Democrats take control of committee gavels and investigative staffs.

The political backdrop is significant. The AP Voter Poll found that roughly three in 10 voters identified democracy as the country’s most important issue, and about eight in 10 of those voters supported Democratic candidates.

Trump has previously dismissed Democratic investigations as partisan attacks.
